CONSUMER PRICES UP 6.6% IN JANUARY 2023: PRICES FOR FOOD AND FUEL MOST AFFECTED

Data from the most recent monthly Consumer Price Index (CPI) survey conducted by the Statistical Institute of Belize showed that in
January 2023, the All-items CPI, which summarizes price levels for all categories of consumer goods and services, stood at 112.4, up
from 105.4 in January 2022. This indicates that the country saw an overall national inflation rate of 6.6 percent on goods
and services that are typically bought by Belizean households. The primary driver of this increase was the ‘Food and Non-Alcoholic
Beverages category, once again accounted for over half of the national inflation rate, as food prices continued to rise rapidly.
This was followed by ‘Transport’, which was responsible for almost one-third of the inflation recorded for the month of January, with fuel
prices remaining higher than they were in the same month of 2022.
